Cactus League Spring Training History.
It’s almost fitting that the Cactus League Spring Training is held in Arizona. As early as the 1900’s, professional baseball had a grip on the Old West state when baseball teams stopped in Arizona to play a few pre-season games. However, it wasn’t until the legendary Cleveland Indians owner, Bill Veek, brought his team to Arizona in 1946, that the Cactus League began to develop. The Indians move was soon followed by Horace Stoneham’s New York Giants. Settling in Hi Corbet Field in Tucson and the “Old” Municipal Stadium in Phoenix, a cultural pre-season baseball scene began to take shape. Throughout the years, other professional teams relocated their pre-season camps to Arizona. In 1954, this desert ball-playing group became officially known as the “Cactus League.” Today, the impact of baseball in Arizona has been unprecedented, providing major economic growth and an increase in state interest. Arizona is committed to keeping this great baseball tradition alive. [Top]
